SELECTING THE RIGHT TILE FOR YOUR PROJECT

Are you thinking about a tile project, backsplash, floor, shower enclosure or entry way? What should you consider when selecting the right material for the job. The term ceramic tile is a generic term in the industry and as it turns out ceramic is the bottom of the tile line. Ceramic tile is cheap in price because its properties are the least durable in the industry. That is not to say they don’t have a place in the line up of great choices. Areas that do not require high durability like a backsplash are good location for a ceramic product. A floor or shower wall are places you might want to step up to a porcelain tile, strong, durable, water resistant and come in a wide range of styles, colors and textures. Porcelain tends to run a little more per square foot but worth the cost in high traffic areas and locations with consistent water contact. Want something a little more elegant? There are a huge selection of stone and glass options out there. The stone & glass category of tile are generally expensive and require a high level of product knowledge & skill to install correct. High traffic areas require a harder product like granite or quartz when selecting a stone. These products are resistant to scratching and moisture penetration. The down side is they are harder to cut & have a high gloss finish, making it slick with wet feet. Want marble for your project? Marble comes in different finishes from high gloss to matte, has a wide range of colors but is highly susceptible to scratching, can retain water if not sealed and expensive. Travertine is similar to marble with a sight improvement in durability. Regardless of the product and route you choose talk to a tile professional before making a decision on your next project. A good tile person can save you time, money, and headaches with your next project.
